Pee Mak Film4/8/2021
WATCH: Robert Pattinson Suits Up as The Batman in Teaser Trailer.Pee Mak 2 is just trying to piggyback on the success of a much better, much more interesting picture. If anything, its a ripoff of the 2013 movie, clumsily aping its aesthetics and offering very little in the way of novelty or original ideas. This film is just trying to piggyback on the success of a much better, much more interesting picture.
It represents the worst of the commerce side of the movie business; the movie actively trying to trick audiences into thinking its something that it is not. To this end, they go to a temple of Mae Nak to make a wish to pass their tests and graduate on time. But they end up insulting the legendary spirit instead, and are thus transported back in time as punishment. They find themselves in the middle of the Mae Nak story, having to help unite the angry spirit (Wanida Termthanaporn) with her lost love and find their way back to present times. It is a sequel to another 2013 Thai horror film, Make Me Shudder. It features the same set of characters, but moves them from their high school milieu to the period setting of the Mae Nak story. Whatever distinct features Make Me Shudder had are all but abandoned as the film apes the elements of the much more successful Pee Mak. Their teeth are blackened out, because that joke was so successful in Pee Mak. The only real differences are that this film goes more lowbrow, and has a weaker sense of timing. Theres a good long chunk of this film thats basically dedicated to making fun of people with harelips. The terrible English dubbing makes the comedy even ineffective, with entire scenes coming off as complete and utter nonsense. The scares are really poorly constructed, with jumpy editing keeping the film from building any sort of tension. Its forays into visual effects arent very good, either, especially when compared to the film its openly ripping off. The films cast isnt able to rise above the terrible material. There are ten main boys in this, but its actually pretty hard to tell most of them apart. Wanida Termthanaporn steps into the iconic character of Nak, but is unable to distinguish herself from other actresses whove played the role. It bends over backwards to do things that a better, more interesting movie has already accomplished. But the awfulness of the content pales in comparison to the misrepresentation being perpetrated by the films marketing. The local poster actually makes the claim that its the original, and that its Asias highest grossing horror comedy film of all time. Its all designed to create a connection to a film that it has nothing to do with.
